Public Notaries  play an important role in the Greek legal system. They shares responsibilities with those of an attorney in Greece and they are also trained under the same conditions as lawyers. In general, a public notary is a legal official who must be present when a contract is read and signed. They are governed by the Notaries Code and are organised in professional associations of notaries. More importantly a public notary does not represent the interests of the parties.

A public notary in Greece is able to draft legal documents including Contracts and Wills.  Another specific activity of a notary  is authenticating documents in order to certify their validity. They must also make sure that the parties are aware of all consequences implied by signing a specific document. Last but not least, the notary keeps the original document that has been drafted and acts as a public record office. In addition the notary must register any transaction in the public records, especially when it comes to real estate transactions so that the buyer can receive the official title of the property.
